How to Tell If a Dunhuang Guzheng Is Authentic

by 昭君张 17 Jul 2025 0 comments

When shopping for a Dunhuang guzheng, it's essential to ensure you're purchasing a genuine instrument — not a knockoff. Here's how to verify the authenticity of a Dunhuang guzheng before you buy:

► Traceable Shipping & Origin

A reputable seller of Dunhuang guzhengs should offer full shipping traceability, starting from the original source.
Authentic Dunhuang guzhengs are shipped from the Shanghai No.1 National Musical Instrument Factory — the only official Dunhuang production site.
If the seller can provide shipment details that trace back to this factory, it's a strong sign that the instrument is genuine.

► Price Check

If the guzheng’s price is significantly lower than the average market price, it may be a red flag.
Dunhuang guzhengs are known for their craftsmanship, and genuine ones don't come cheap.
A low price could indicate a lower manufacturing cost — and possibly a counterfeit product. Always evaluate carefully before purchasing.

► Anti-Counterfeit Trademark

Real Dunhuang guzhengs feature a distinctive trademark near the brand logo.
When viewed under light, you'll see a vivid image of a flying celestial (Feitian) — a traditional Chinese motif — embedded in the logo area.
This optical feature is hard to replicate and is a key anti-counterfeit element.

► Serial Number Verification

Every authentic Dunhuang guzheng has a matching set of ID numbers located in three places:

  1. Upper left corner of the bottom panel

  2. Hangtag on the right side of the bottom panel

  3. Barcode sticker on the instrument case

These three serial numbers should be identical. If any of them don’t match, the guzheng may not be authentic.

► The Red Mark Inside the Soundbox

Look inside the soundbox of the instrument — you’ll find a red label partially crossing a horizontal brace.
Part of the mark is printed inside the brace and part outside. This unique printing technique is another important authenticity marker of a real Dunhuang guzheng.

► Instrument Case Markings

Open the instrument case and look at it from a certain angle — you should see high-pitch note symbols, the letters H and D, and a customer service phone number.
These markings are subtle, but they're intentional and serve as further proof of authenticity.

By following these tips, you'll be better equipped to spot a real Dunhuang guzheng and avoid the risk of purchasing a fake. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to contact us — we’re always happy to help you verify and choose the right instrument.
